Electrical Mechanicians carried Petty Officer rate. Electrical Mechanicians were chosen on merit by gaining high test results from previous trade courses taken at HMS Collingwood. Over 75% pass rate on all course was the criteria for being chosen to take the two year course for Mechanician.

The person also had to have at least three years' service left after completion of the course
